ZF Friedrichshafen AG and the BMW Group have signed a long-term supply contract in the field of passenger car powertrains. At the heart of the agreement is the supply and further development of the proven eight-speed automatic transmission (8HP). The contract, with a volume of several billion euros, runs until the late 2030s. According to their own statements, both companies are thereby creating a solid foundation for technology-neutral and low-emission mobility of the future.

“Together with BMW, we are sending a strong signal for innovation, efficiency, and sustainability in a dynamically evolving industry,” says ZF CEO Mathias Miedreich.

“This agreement underscores the strategic importance of our eight-speed automatic transmission as a key technology for the transformation of powertrains.”

As part of the partnership, the 8HP transmission modular system will be continuously further developed. The goal is to provide customers with the most powerful and efficient transmission that meets the requirements of future powertrain concepts.

“The new agreement with BMW demonstrates how important long-term planning horizons are for technological advancements,” emphasizes Sebastian Schmitt, Head of the Electrified Drive Technologies Division at ZF. “It creates clarity and stability for both companies and enables us to specifically tailor the next generation of the 8HP for efficiency, performance, and future-readiness.”
