Electrochemical energy storage is set to play a key role in the future energy mix. Since 2018, the Center for Electrochemical Energy Storage Ulm & Karlsruhe (CELEST), one of the world's most ambitious research platforms in this field, has therefore been combining application-oriented basic research with practical development and innovative production technologies.

CELEST is supported by three strong partners from the region: the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the University of Ulm and the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW). In addition, the members of CELEST are integrated into a large international network of academic partners and collaborations. By utilizing the expertise acquired throughout Europe in the field of electrochemical energy storage and coordinating the research work, the partners should be able to take on a leading role in battery development worldwide. The aim is to promote the results of basic research at development level. To this end, modern battery cell production and testing facilities as well as expertise in the areas of process development and battery system technology are to be brought together in the member pool. The close cooperation and communication with long-standing industrial partners of the CELEST members enables the rapid technology transfer of the innovative research results achieved by the members. "As a platform, CELEST seeks an open exchange with other networks and players. Whether you are a small or medium-sized enterprise, a large company, a city or a municipality - we look forward to getting to know you," says Prof. Dr. Maximilian Fichtner, Director of CELEST.
