Wi-SUN is an international association that counts over 180 companies from 12 countries as members. With its new FAN certification program , the association intends to facilitate large outdoor networks for intelligent cities, intelligent utility companies, and other roll-outs on the Internet of Things (IoT). FAN stands for Field Area Networks, which comprise a communication structure for very large networks. The Wi-SUN members intend to bring the first certified products onto the market as early as the 4th quarter of 2018. An external test laboratory first checks that the devices work easily and securely with one another and thus that they can be launched on the market quickly.

Only in the last few years have associations been working harder on standardizing IoT technology. Along with Wi-SUN, the Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) is one of the organizations promoting the standardization of digital communication. The most prominent members of the OCF include Microsoft and Qualcomm.
