Mercedes has designed the following e-chassis for its Vision Urbanetic concept: a platform with an electric motor, a battery pack and a chassis. A few simple steps suffice to provide this platform with either with a passenger or a cargo module. The resulting vehicle drives fully autonomously. It is controlled by central station, while numerous sensors and cameras on the vehicle ensure that no accidents happen.
The car apparently accommodates up to twelve passengers as a passenger van. There is plenty of available space because the car does without a driver's seat, steering wheel and gear shift. Mercedes is planning usage in the public transport sector, comparable to a dial-a-bus. In only two minutes the passenger module will be exchanged for a cargo module that haulage contractors can use for freight traffic at night. The cargo area's volume of 10 cubic meters accommodates about ten pallets.
