How functional safety can be easily implemented and complex requirements in drive technology can be easily solved – with drastically reduced wiring effort, without expensive Ethernet-based solutions in the field, while conserving resources and with significantly fewer of cables and connectors – is currently being demonstrated by Bihl+Wiedemann GmbH with ASi-5 and ASi-3 as well as the safety solutions ASi-5 Safety and ASi Safety at Work, the established field bus solution for the first automation level.

The ZPA solution (Zero Pressure Accumulation) via AS-i (Actuator-Sensor-Interface) can be used to implement a self-sufficient zero pressure accumulation conveyor for a wide range of materials – without a higher-level control system and independently of the drive and field bus solutions used in the system. Different drive technology requirements should be able to be perfectly solved by combining ASi-5 and ASi-3 in the applications. Uncomplicated functions such as start/stop, left-right operation or open/close can be implemented most easily and economically with ASi-3 modules. ASi-5 is ideal for demanding applications.

With ASi-5 Safety, many safe and standard signals can be used under a single address – and complex safety applications can be solved more easily. According to the manufacturer, ASi-5 Safety reduces machine costs, is compatible with all previous ASi devices, offers a higher data bandwidth and expanded diagnostic options. Bihl+Wiedemann has modern ASi-5 Safety gateways as well as input modules with two safe inputs and up to twelve standard signals.

The wide range of standard and safety technologies should make it possible to quickly and easily implement demanding requirements for automated guided vehicles (AGV). The customized safety solution from the Mannheim-based company should always enable safe communication between the AGVs, but also with a central unit. According to the Mannheim-based company, this makes it child's play, for example, to switch off all AGVs centrally from a safe emergency stop signal – simply via LAN, WLAN, 5G and much more.
