The release of CODESYS V3.5 SP14 offers manufacturers of intelligent devices a string of new functions essential for Industry 4.0. Deployed in industrial settings to program application software for some 1,000 different smart device platforms, CODESYS - the market-leading IEC 61131-3 development platform - works with embedded devices that have no operating system, Linux-based boards and even industrial PCs with Windows, Linux or VxWorks. The separate runtime system CODESYS Control, meanwhile, ensures device manufacturers’ hardware is compatible with CODESYS.

In December 2018, CODESYS Control saw its range of functions grow thanks to the release of CODESYS V3.5 SP14. As a result, the runtime system is now available as a 64-bit version for all ARM/Cortex-based platforms, with multi-core support - including for the Raspberry Pi - as an optional extra. Further cyber security functions have also been added to make systems with this kind of configuration fit for use in Industry 4.0 environments. For instance, it is now possible to configure user administration and communication encrypted and signed with X.509 certificates as a user option.

Besides these core functions of the runtime system, the PLCHandler has been upgraded too. This add-on is now also available as a 64-bit version for Windows or Linux and is designed to allow any external system, such as graphic user interfaces and configuration tools, symbolic access to application software data. This communication channel can also be encrypted and aims to support simple standard monitoring for embedded devices of lower performance standards.
