Quantum computers play out their strengths above all where the number of possible solutions grows immeasurably. The difference between a quantum computer and a conventional PC is therefore about as great as that between a jet plane and a zeppelin in terms of performance. No wonder that there is currently a fierce global competition for innovation in the development of quantum computers. German companies and research institutes also have their sights firmly set on the potential of this new key technology and are devoting a great deal of energy and extensive financial resources to advancing the field of quantum technology.

More than half of the companies (54 percent) attribute great importance to quantum computers for international competitiveness. This was the finding of a recent study by the German digital association Bitkom. More than 600 companies with 20 or more employees were surveyed. It is striking that the importance attributed to quantum computing for the future correlates with the size of the companies surveyed. While around half (51 percent) of the companies with 20 to 99 employees believe that quantum computing will be very important in the near future, this figure is already three quarters (74 percent) for companies with 2,000 or more employees.

As Bitkom President Achim Berg explains, "Those who can master and apply quantum technologies will secure significant competitive advantages. Quantum computers can solve problems that supercomputers fail at, such as calculating complex supply and production chains, simulating the effectiveness of drugs in the body or analyzing and forecasting developments on the financial markets."

This important and innovative topic was also discussed at the Hannover Messe Digital Edition. For example, at the virtual booth of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft. There, various competence centers presented their work as part of expert panels. You still have the chance to view the presentations on our website until June 11, 2021.
