The Korean electronics group has published a patent for a coating with self-healing properties for displays. Scratches on the cellphone could thus soon be a thing of the past.

Samsung Electronics applied for patent for the coating back in February 2018 and has recently published it. According to the patent specification, it is a thin, light and transparent, but hard coating for a "portable electronic device such as a smartphone or a tablet PC". The patented protective material apparently repels fingerprints and water and even has self-healing properties - annoying scratches on displays could thus disappear on their own. According to Samsung, the innovative coating is particularly suitable for foldable or flexible devices and displays.
By its own account , Samsung's display panel business generated sales of 5.67 trillion won (about 4.38 billion euros) in the second quarter of 2018 and an operating profit of 0.14 trillion won (about 0.11 billion euros) and therefore poorer figures than in the first quarter of 2018. The Group expects earnings to improve in the second half of 2018 thanks to increasing sales of flexible OLEDs.
