CERMcity is located at the Aldenhoven Testing Center, a joint venture of RWTH Aachen University and the district of Düren. The site , which also boasts ‘seeing’ street lights and networked stoplights, is available for the testing of autonomous vehicles. According to the initiators, the site aims to open up opportunities in particular for SMEs, which cannot or do not wish to maintain their own research infrastructure. The project is being backed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with funding of around €3.3 million; RWTH is coordinating the project. Other partners include the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, Aachen University of Applied Sciences, TÜV Rheinland, and the companies BASELABS and Silicon Radar.

Areas for e-mobility tests are also being set up elsewhere in Germany.In September 2018, German public-broadcasting institution WDR reported on the opening of a test circuit in Dusseldorf. The focus here will initially be on 4G and WLAN communication between road users. The opening of a test area in Karlsruhe , featuring all types of public roads, was announced back in May.
