To mass produce the Care-O-bot 4 , which was developed at the Fraunhofer IPA, as of 2018, co-developer Ulrich Reiser has gone into business for himself : Unity Robotics is the name of the spin-off that will take over marketing. Fraunhofer IPA will nevertheless continue to develop the Care-O-bot for new fields of application. The goal is for the assistant robot to help people with physical disabilities lead a self-determined life in their own home. Aided by its sensors, Care-O-bot should soon be able to correctly grasp complex everyday situations and thus offer concrete physical support. Care-O-bot 4 made its first big appearance at the 2015 Hanover trade fair .
Regarding the development partnership between Unity Robotics and Fraunhofer IPA, the founder of the spin-off says: "I can well imagine awarding the Fraunhofer IPA research contracts for the development of new Care-O-bot functions in the future. The last steps to market maturity will then be taken over by my employees and myself." On the other hand, the Fraunhofer IPA also benefits from being able to base and commercialize its research work on a product-ready, field-tested platform.
