Faced with collapse, explosion or radiation hazards, the taurob tracker knows no fear, entering burning buildings to collect important data inside and deliver it to the firefighter team. Vienna-based start-up company taurob has developed the first mobile robot for fire departments and other first responders, and is presenting it at HANNOVER MESSE 2014 in the "tech transfer – Gateway2Innovation" theme park on Wednesday, 9 April.

Here is how a taurob tracker is put to use: when a house is burning and threatening to collapse, it can be too dangerous for firefighters to enter and look for the fire source – but not for the taurob tracker. Controlled remotely by a firefighter, this robot enters the house, where it collects location and sensor data, takes samples of hazardous materials, and can use a gripping arm to inspect, collect and move objects aside. Thermal imaging cameras, gas or radiation meters can easily be attached to the robot. The resulting video images and data are displayed immediately for the operator on a robust tablet computer.

The taurob team worked directly with Austrian fire departments to learn just how important it is to quickly and easily operate devices under emergency conditions. The result: the taurob tracker has its own intelligence and supports users in critical situations – the robot can move through narrow doorways almost on its own, and the gripping arm is easy to control.
