The project, which is scheduled to run until January 31 2020, is called ROboB (Released Order based on Blockchain) . It is focused on the transfer release order for valuable container freight: all partners involved in the process exchange this order which, for example, entitles a logistics company to pick up a container. The project partners hope to make access more efficient and secure by leveraging blockchain to provide a common database. It makes use of invariable digital signatures, which in turn use cryptography and consensus algorithms. The project is testing two alternative approaches for their practicability.

ROboB is a collaborative project of the Innovative Port Technologies (IHATEC) program funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI). The Institute of Logistics and Corporate Management of the Technical University of Hamburg is one of the partners, and the project is headed by the Port Community System operator DAKOSY .

The Port of Rotterdam is already using blockchain technologies: in its " BlockLab ", the development company "InnovationQuarter" is examining various possible applications, from optimizing freight flows to facilitating the energy transition in the port.
