A conventional electric motor transforms electrical energy into mechanical power by means of electrically charged inductors creating magnetic fields, whose opposing attraction and repulsion are converted into movement. These motors are generally geared down to create higher torque. At least that's how things worked in the past. At HANNOVER MESSE 2018, the Osnabrück Center for Environmental Communications run by the German Federal Environmental Foundation is showcasing the innovative, energy-saving, high-power electric industrial motor developed by OSWALD Elektromotoren GmbH. It not only won the German Environmental Award 2017 for developing this non-geared torque motor, but the groundbreaking technology behind it has catapulted the company to the status of global market leader in this field.
The idea of using torque motors as the main drives in direct drive engineering could revolutionize the future construction and use of electric motors, particularly with regard to main drives. Their infinite adaptability and high efficiency mean that these powerful drives are both suitable for a wide range of uses and also exceptionally kind to the environment and climate. They consume up to 50 percent less energy than other mechanical or hydraulic drive solutions. What’s more, the new torque motors are quieter, lighter and more compact - and dispensing entirely with gear oil reduces the already low running costs even further. Besides industrial applications, the motors will also start to take over powering ships. In many cases, they provide the first ever option of purely electric, emissions-free drive at very low noise levels. Compared to conventional diesel engines, this motor technology promises energy savings of up to 90 percent for shipping operations.
