5G Juggler - End-to-end networking with Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN)
The fourth industrial revolution is presenting automation technology with new challenges, including in industrial communication. Communication between sensors, machines and plants, which is dominated by fieldbus systems, is increasingly being replaced by Ethernet-based fieldbus systems. A new, emerging technology in this context is Time-Sensitive networking (TSN). TSN makes it possible to build an Ethernet-based industrial communication infrastructure.
At the Fraunhofer IPT, we are working on the networking and digitization of production, in particular the digital infrastructures required for this, from the field to the cloud level. A convergent and at the same time real-time capable communication network is crucial here. Both wired and wireless systems must ensure both the real-time requirements of the field level and interoperability with cloud systems at the IT level. At Hannover Messe, we are demonstrating this with the 5G TSN Juggler. Here, two motors controlled via 5G, and two motors controlled via Industrial Ethernet work together to juggle a table tennis ball. The synchronicity and timely transmission are guaranteed in both cases by TSN.
