Rapid diagnostics without laboratory testing: The SmartSense system developed by researchers at the PhoenixD Cluster of Excellence transforms an ordinary smartphone into a medical testing device. This technology is designed to enable important health parameters to be determined within minutes in the future, whether at home, in a medical practice or on the go.
The system utilizes the smartphone's existing technology: the flash illuminates a specialized sensor chip, while the camera captures the response. Using blood, saliva, or sweat samples, the system can determine various health markers and thus measure inflammatory or cardiac markers or vitamin D. In the future, the platform is intended to be expanded to enable simultaneous detection of multiple biomolecules (multiplexing) with high sensitivity and specificity. The system is designed to be used both by trained personnel in clinical settings and by patients themselves for self-monitoring at home.
