In the Future Labs, stakeholders from academia and industry collaborate to develop digital solutions for practical challenges. ZDIN promotes this synergistic collaboration in Lower Saxony and offers stakeholders an extensive network for cross-sector research into relevant digitalisation topics.
1. The DIRRIGENT project is developing an app for farmers to help them better track their water consumption for field irrigation. Currently, this is often done only manually. The water meter is photographed using a smartphone and the reading is automatically extracted from the image. This means there is no need to retrofit expensive digital water meters. Digitalisation gives farmers a clearer overview of how much of their water quota they have used and makes it easier to report consumption at the end of the season.
2. By using photos taken by passers-by and those affected by extreme weather events, an invisible sensor network is created – without the need for additional equipment. Every photo taken and published at a body of water or during extreme weather situations contains valuable information about water levels, flow velocity and water pollution, provided the camera’s position is known. Through public participation, a continuously growing dataset is created that can be used by first responders, planners and for documenting flood events.
3. What if old mining infrastructure could be incorporated into modern flood protection solutions? Our project analyses the extreme flooding that occurred in Goslar in 2017 and demonstrates how the Oker-Grane tunnel can be used as additional storage to mitigate peak flows and better protect towns from future extreme events.
