The Fraunhofer Society is making a clear statement in the international arena: In 2025, it is once again among the top 50 applicants at the European Patent Office (EPO), has moved up to fourth place nationally, and thus once again leads the ranking of European public research institutions.
The current figures not only demonstrate the central importance of science for Germany’s innovative strength. The analysis also makes it clear that Germany is particularly strong in areas where future markets are emerging—especially in the fields of artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and sustainable energy systems. In 2025, Germany continues to account for the most patent applications in Europe and ranks second globally behind the United States.
“Patents are an important indicator of technological progress, value creation, and innovative strength. The Fraunhofer Society holds a leading position in patent applications across Europe—something we can rightly be proud of. This demonstrates the excellence of German, application-oriented research and underscores Germany’s leading international role in key technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, semiconductors, and sustainable energy systems,” emphasizes Prof. Holger Hanselka, President of the Fraunhofer Society, adding: “Especially in economically and technologically challenging times, it is crucial that applied research delivers concrete solutions for industry, thereby securing competitiveness, prosperity, and technological sovereignty. As a systemically important partner to industry, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft consistently translates research into concrete applications. Close collaboration with companies, excellent scientific work, and a focus on future technologies demonstrate: Applied research remains a central driver of economic strength and a vital investment in stability and prosperity.”
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s renewed top ranking should be viewed not only as a scientific success but also as a strategic gain for the country. In many European countries, patent applications declined in 2025. Germany, however, continues to demonstrate strong innovation momentum despite economic weakness. The return to the top of the European rankings underscores how crucial scientific excellence is for Europe’s technological sovereignty and long-term competitiveness.
