A major boost in energy efficiency as the first climate goal
August 2, 2017 was Earth Overshoot Day and this year isn't looking much better. The best strategy against climate change is to save energy.5 Feb 2018 Tim Stockschläger
In 2008, almost exactly 10 years ago, the EU pledged to increase energy efficiency by 20% by 2020 . This goal, which was adopted in the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan , is currently at risk, with only 7% achieved to date. Now, quick solutions that reduce energy consumption are in demand. All the same, the Members of the European Parliament are currently voting on new energy goals for the year 2030 .
Besides efforts being made by industry, that is by the Deutsche Unternehmensinitiative Energieeffizienz ( DENEFF - German Industry Initiative for Energy Efficiency ), the national support strategy for energy efficiency and heat from renewable energies has made funds available. These have been supplemented with state assistance. The Federal State of Thüringen, for example, provides companies with financial support in implementing climate goals by 2020 with its Green Invest Support Program . Last year alone, Thüringer Aufbaubank processed 279 grant applications for consultation on energy saving . Investments in energy efficiency technologies are wise for companies from an economic point of view according to Environment Secretary, Anja Siegesmund . After all, "companies that have their operating costs under control can secure jobs and hold their ground on international markets for the long term."
