With around 35 subsidiaries and affiliates and over 25,000 employees, Lufthansa Technik AG is one of the world's leading providers of technical services for the aviation industry. One of the subsidiaries of this internationally accredited maintenance, production and development group is Lufthansa Technik Intercoat, which specializes in repairing components using an advanced epoxy coating method. INTERFILL is a specially developed material based on epoxy resin that extends the life of aviation, rail and automotive components and enhances their performance features.

While advanced epoxy coating was previously a completely manual procedure, Lufthansa Technik Intercoat has now for the first time succeeded in automating certain parts of the process. This involves clamping the component on a rotating device in a booth and then using a robot arm and a fine nozzle to coat it with INTERFILL. A special applicator ensures the ideal amount is applied with an even thickness. This prevents air pockets, which are a recurrent problem in a fully manual process, and thus eliminates complex reworking. The innovative system delivers consistently high-quality results and considerable time savings. "Thanks to this partial automation, we've been able to reduce the coating time to a third. This enables us to react quickly and flexibly to customer needs, thus increasing our competitiveness," says Andreas Sauer, Managing Director of Lufthansa Technik Intercoat.
