Network operator Sigfox and PNI Sensor plan to jointly launch a smart parking solution on the US market. At the core of the joint system is the IoT-capable smart sensor PlacePod from PNI Sensor, which communicates with the low-power wide area network (LPWAN) from Sigfox. This smart parking sensor is also suitable for dense urban areas, since it filters out magnetic interferences from, for example, passing underground trains or high-voltage power lines, which could interfere with the accurate identification of occupied and vacant parking spaces. The system will be showcased at this year’s IoT World on May 14-17 in Santa Clara, California.

Smart parking is just one of many applications possible with LPWAN. The Deggendorf Institute of Technology recently entered into a cooperation with Sigfox to research other fields of application in a project entitled “ 1 Euro IoT “ – one euro because the cost-efficient, low energy-consuming technology should also make it possible to equip throw-away items and packaging with IoT technology for a low cost of between 20 cents and two euros.
