With the “world’s first reversible EV powertrain design” , the automotive manufacturer hopes to guarantee future viability for its historic models. From 2019, customers should be able to make their classic cars electric in order to avoid potential driving bans on combustion engines. The “heritage electrification concept” is based on lessons learned from developing the Aston Martin Rapide E, unveiled as a concept study in 2015. The electric car is to be built on a small scale in 2019: just 155 of the 610 HP sports cars will roll off the production lines at first, according to “auto motor & sport” magazine . Additionally, emobilitaet.online reports that the Lagonda series is to be relaunched as a purely electric luxury brand.
As a proof of concept, the Brits converted a 1970 DB6 MkII Volante to electric power. The components for the electric powertrain are largely contained in an EV cassette. According to Aston Martin, this ensures the car can also be restored to its original condition, preserving its authenticity as a mobile collector’s item and retaining its historical value.
As reported by heise.de , Jaguar is following a similar approach with the electrification of its classic E-Type sports car. The first models are expected to be available in 2020 under the name E-Type Zero.
