The joint construction is located nearby: it will be built in the immediate vicinity of the Norilsk Nickel (Nornickel) nickel and cobalt refinery. The factory is expected to be producing battery materials for around 300,000 electric vehicles per year by the end of 2020. BASF and Nornickel have also signed a long-term supply agreement for the raw materials nickel and cobalt. According to its own statements, BASF is also examining the suitability of other locations in Europe where such plants can be built. According to a Berlin-Brandenburg Broadcasting Station (RBB) report, the small town of Schwarzheide in southern Brandenburg is also on their list.
Claudia Dörr-Voß, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), spoke out in favor of the establishment of a battery cell production facility in Germany in mid-October. According to her, the Federal Government is actively supporting the industry in order to enable Germany to play a leading role in the sector: "If we want to maintain good jobs in the industry and create new ones, we have to be at the forefront of battery cell manufacturing." In 2017, the EU initiated the establishment of the European Battery Alliance (EBA) , which is intended to accelerate Europe-wide production.
