The electronics industry is facing a growing problem: many new applications such as smart labels, wireless sensors, and flexible IoT devices require energy sources that are ultra-thin, reliable, and powerful at the same time. Traditional batteries are often too large, too thick, too sensitive to temperature, and can even become safety hazards under high loads. At the same time, there is a sharp increase in demand for longer service life, shorter charging times, and greater integrability into flexible or industrially manufactured components—a need that conventional energy storage devices cannot easily meet.
Solid-state technology enables industrial manufacturing processes
The solution comes with the BTRY T150. The new battery from Swiss deep tech startup BTRY AG is extremely flat at around 0.2 millimeters and was developed specifically for integration into thin, flexible products such as smart BLE labels or IoT modules. Thanks to its solid-state technology, it is temperature-stable up to approximately 150 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for industrial manufacturing processes such as lamination. Despite its small size, the T150 delivers power peaks of up to 100 milliamps, for example for Bluetooth Low Energy transmissions, and can operate autonomously for long periods of time with a capacity of around five milliampere hours. The battery is rechargeable and is even said to be suitable for energy harvesting systems such as solar or RF chargers to bridge periods without an external energy source.
Paving the way for new applications
BTRY AG itself is a Swiss start-up founded in 2023 and a spin-off from Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, and ETH Zurich. BTRY AG sees its mission as developing ultra-thin solid-state batteries, for which the company combines advanced semiconductor manufacturing with innovative energy storage technology. This enables applications that have previously failed with conventional batteries – from smart tracking labels and high-temperature sensors to compact electronic products. BTRY has raised significant funds for the industrialization of its battery technologies in several financing rounds and is currently considered one of the most promising deep tech startups in the European battery ecosystem.
