Salzgitter AG has been awarded the top grade ‘A’ by the renowned global non-profit organisation CDP for its commitment to climate protection – for the second time in a row. Salzgitter AG already received the top grade from the CDP last year. Once again, the organisation assessed the climate protection measures of more than 23,000 companies worldwide. Only four percent, including Salzgitter AG, met the requirements for the highest rating category.
Consistent focus on sustainability and climate protection
The repeat of last year's success shows that Salzgitter AG is consistently pursuing its transformation strategy towards greater sustainability and climate protection and is not resting on its laurels as a pioneer in the field of low-carbon steel. CDP's assessment is based on clearly defined criteria. These include the transparent disclosure of environmental data, the recording and evaluation of environmental risks, the introduction of effective management processes and the implementation of concrete measures to improve environmental performance. The assessment also takes into account evidence of best practices and the setting of ambitious, science-based climate targets.
Gradual transition to hydrogen-based processes
Gunnar Groebler, CEO of Salzgitter AG, comments: "Receiving the top rating again confirms that we are on the right track with our “Salzgitter AG 2030” strategy and will not slacken our efforts. A sustainable and high-performance industry and climate protection are not mutually exclusive, even in a challenging market environment. On the contrary: the two belong together. With our SALCOS transformation programme in particular, we are taking responsibility and pioneering competitive, low-carbon steel production in Germany. Receiving the A rating for the second time in a row is both an incentive and an obligation to continue resolutely on our path.”
For change across the entire value chain
Salzgitter AG has participated in the CDP reporting format every year since 2016. Receiving the top rating is closely linked to the long-term ‘Salzgitter AG 2030’ strategy, at the heart of which is the SALCOS – Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking transformation programme. This programme envisages a gradual conversion of steel production to hydrogen-based processes, thereby making a significant contribution to industrial transformation. At the same time, the Group is focusing on partnership-based cooperation and innovative strength in order to actively shape change throughout the entire value chain.
