B2Square GmbH is a German green-tech company based in Pulheim, in the Rhineland. The startup was founded in 2021 by founder and CEO Frank H. W. Albrecht. B2Square develops and markets sustainable binders for the construction and infrastructure industries. Through applied materials research, the company is playing a pioneering role in the innovation of traditional building materials and is already collaborating on pilot projects with stakeholders in the construction industry, municipalities, and airports.

The company’s core product is the patented binder “B2PURE – Instant BioBitumen,” a biogenic, petroleum-free alternative to conventional bitumen. The innovation is based on a modular concept: a natural asphaltene powder is combined with a cold biogenic mortar liquid, resulting in a bio-bitumen that can be processed immediately. The product can be integrated into existing asphalt mixing plants as a “drop-in” solution without requiring any retrofitting. In addition to road construction, it is suitable for roofing membranes, bridge decks, and airport runways. Key benefits are said to include low-temperature paving as well as doubled resistance to weathering and stress.

B2Square GmbH aims to sustainably decarbonize and decouple transportation infrastructure construction from petroleum. The CO2-negative bio-binder is expected to drastically reduce the infrastructure’s ecological footprint. In addition, the startup aims to extend the service life of roads by a factor of 1.5 to 2 in order to lengthen maintenance intervals, conserve resources, and reduce overall costs for the public sector.
