Bomb-proof: Multi-protocol modules for ATEX zone 2/22
Turck's new networked safety platform promises a cost-efficient and flexible safety solution for small to medium-sized plants, up to ATEX zone 2/22.

Turck, based in Mülheim an der Ruhr, is a global specialist in cross-industry factory, process and logistics automation. With its digitally networkable solutions for efficient automation systems, the company is closing gaps in the future-oriented topics of Industry 4.0 and IioT. For example, with the newly introduced machine safety solution, which is specially designed to meet the requirements of small to medium-sized plants. The combination of the Turck Safe Link safety protocol with the safe TBEN-LL-4FDI-4FDX IP67 block I/O modules enables flexible and cost-efficient safety control through decentralized installation. The multiprotocol-capable modules support Ethernet/IP, Profinet and Modbus TCP and use the Turck Safe Link protocol for secure communication with each other. The safety-related logic is implemented directly in the modules with safe inputs and outputs. Networking the modules creates a modular and scalable safety architecture that significantly reduces cabling effort and installation time.
Up to 31 modules can be networked in an application, with each module providing 127 diagnostic bytes for monitoring and quick error diagnosis. Two bytes are available per module for safety-related input and output data, with a further two bytes of non-safety-related fieldbus bits for input and output for exchange with a non-safety PLC. Decentralized installation of the modules reduces the need for central control cabinets and makes both maintenance and expansion of the system significantly easier.
With their approval for ATEX Zone 2/22, the modules are also suitable for use in explosion-hazardous areas. This enables safety-related signals to be reliably transmitted even in harsh environments. The TBEN-LL-4FDI-4FDX safe block I/O modules will be available in the first quarter of 2025.
