According to its own statements, Freiburg-based ionysis GmbH develops highly efficient, emission-free and sustainable core components for fuel cells and electrolysers. These include the so-called “membrane electrode assemblies” with a significantly reduced content of perfluorinated substances. The aim of the Breisgau-based company is to further develop novel, more powerful and environmentally friendly membrane electrode assemblies and to demonstrate their technical feasibility on a large scale. In September 2022, ionysis commenced operations and has since grown to a team of 26 employees. The basis for this spin-off from Hahn-Schickard and the University of Freiburg was created by several publicly funded research projects.

ISO 9001:2015 certification is an internationally recognized standard that ensures that the quality management system meets customer and regulatory requirements. For ionysis, this certification is an important step in the company's development, demonstrating a commitment to meeting and exceeding market quality requirements and continuous improvement in all aspects of business operations.

ionysis' automotive and industrial customers in the field of fuel cells and electrolysers place the highest demands on quality and reliability. The ISO 9001 certification guarantees that ionysis' catalyst coated membranes are manufactured under strict quality control procedures. This is expected to strengthen Ionysis' position as a relevant development partner and supplier in the automotive and industrial sectors, where precision and quality are key requirements.

The journey to ISO 9001 certification was an 18-month journey that transformed the entire company. Started as a university spin-off, ionysis has grown to become an R&D partner and pilot product supplier for several OEMs and large industrial partners. This transformation involved the introduction of a robust quality management system, extensive staff training and the adoption of industry best practices to meet the exacting requirements of the automotive and industrial sectors.

Dr. Matthias Kachel, Senior Manager Quality at ionysis GmbH, who led the 18-month qualification process, comments: “This certification is the result of a great effort by our entire team. Ionysis' development from a research-focused start-up to a supplier of automotive-grade pilot products requires careful planning and the establishment of appropriate quality control, including new processes, QC tools and workflows. With the ISO 9001 certification, we have a solid foundation on which to build in the coming years.”

Dr. Andreas Büchler, Chief Operating Officer of ionysis GmbH, adds: “This certification is proof of all the measures we have implemented to deliver innovative and reliable solutions to our customers. ISO 9001 is an important milestone for ionysis. The next step is to continuously improve our processes to meet and exceed expectations.”
