With the rather unwieldly name of ‘Cumulocity IoT Edge, powered by Dell Technologies’, Darmstadt-based Software AG and US company Dell have unveiled an appliance aimed at simplifying sensor and device data processing for customers in edge computing. The appliance comprises the new Cumulocity IoT Edge software, a single-server variant of Software AG’s Cumulocity IoT platform . Dell contributes the hardware, in the form of a range of servers. Together, this makes for a first-rate appliance that masters functions such as streaming analytics, smart rules, and fieldbus connectivity.
The two partners primarily define the relevant application area as the network edge, where the appliance is coupled with local Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The appliance processes the device data, filters it and aggregates it, and finally forwards it to enterprise applications or the cloud for further processing. Several industry-specific software modules are available for Cumulocity IoT Edge – for mechanical engineering, the manufacturing industry, and logistics, for example.
