Designed for a wide range of industrial applications
OMRON’s automation experts are expanding their drive portfolio with the new R1 (3G3R1) frequency converter. The most powerful member of the OMRON converter family covers a power range from 0.4 to 630 kilowatts at 400 volts AC and is designed for a service life of up to ten years.

Machine builders often face a wide variety of challenges when it comes to drive control, even within a single machine. Whilst simple horizontal movements can be controlled relatively easily, vertical axes require significantly greater precision and stability. This applies in particular to the safe holding of heavy loads and to a controlled start from a standstill as soon as the brake is released. The R1 frequency converter was developed for these demanding applications. According to OMRON, it is suitable for, amongst other things, hoists, storage and retrieval machines, presses, winding machines, rolling and machine tools, as well as for fans, pumps and compressors.
For users who are already using OMRON’s M1 frequency converter, the switch is particularly straightforward. The R1 and M1 are based on the same parameter structure and use identical terminal designations, functions and communication addressing. The programming environment also remains familiar: both drives can be programmed and customised using Sysmac Studio. This means that existing PLC programmes and function blocks can be transferred directly without the need for additional training.
Beyond sheer performance, the R1 was developed to reduce two of the most common time-wasters in production: unplanned downtime and time-consuming commissioning. Predictive maintenance functions help to identify potential problems at an early stage. Examples include warnings regarding IGBT service life, alerts on cooling air flow and comprehensive data tracking. This allows potential faults to be rectified before they lead to production downtime.
Commissioning is also set to become simpler: a new multifunctional control unit with support for ten languages, as well as Bluetooth and USB interfaces, enables technicians worldwide to carry out quick and straightforward setup and diagnostics, regardless of their location or language.
The STO (SIL3 / PLe) safety function, integrated as standard, provides additional safety. No separate safety hardware is required. At the same time, the R1 is designed for use in demanding industrial environments in accordance with IEC 60721-3-3, Class 3C2. For applications with external cooling, a mounting adapter for IP55 protection is available as an option. Furthermore, the R1 features a Modbus RTU interface as standard and is certified to CE, UL, cUL/CSA and RoHS2.
