Up until now, Japan has predominantly focused on solar energy and onshore wind turbines as renewable sources of energy. It is only since 2018 that there has also been a law governing offshore turbines, although no turbines have yet been erected at sea. E.ON has now announced that it has signed a cooperation agreement to jointly develop offshore wind projects in Japan with Japanese project developer Kyuden Mirai Energy . The cooperation will kick off with a study to jointly select a location for development, construction, and operations in the Kyushu area, the southernmost island of Japan. The companies may consider expanding the partnership to other regions in Japan.

Back in January this year, Japanese power company TEPCO and Danish company Ørsted, the world’s leading offshore wind developer, announced their cooperation and signed a memorandum of understanding. The first project the new partners want to get to work on is the Choshi offshore wind farm near Tokyo, for which TEPCO has already carried out a seabed survey.
