When it comes to the so-called transport transition to electromobility, the rapidly increasing electrification of bicycles is not necessarily the first thing that springs to mind. However, in both urban and rural areas, this sporty, economical and ecological form of transportation is playing an increasingly important role in private transport. Delta, a global leader in energy management and provider of IoT-based, intelligent, environmentally friendly solutions, has recognized this trend and has now announced the market launch of a smart mid-motor for e-bikes in Europe. Designed with a unique, patented architecture, Delta says the new mid-motor weighs just 2.9 kilograms and has a maximum torque of 90 Newton meters, underlining Delta's commitment to developing efficient, energy-saving and powerful solutions for the mobility sector. Michael Mayer-Rosa, Senior Director of the Industrial Automation Business Group, Delta Electronics EMEA Region, said: "Our Delta mid-motor represents a major advance in e-bike technology and reflects our commitment to innovation and excellence in the mobility sector."

Compact, powerful design

As one of the most compact and lightweight drives in its class, the Delta mid-motor is designed to give e-bike manufacturers more flexibility in the development of slim, lightweight e-bikes. Its high torque is also ideal for e-cargo bikes and e-mountain bikes where robust performance is required. According to Delta, the motor's patented concentric cylinder design and innovative gear technology ensure efficient power transmission and easy installation, while the minimized shroud emphasizes the overall aesthetics of the e-bike by making the motor barely visible.

Ecosystem and customization

Delta not only offers the motor, but also provides an entire ecosystem for e-bike manufacturers. The motor can be purchased on its own - allowing designers to develop their own e-drive systems - or as part of a comprehensive package with well-known partners. Delta offers built-in and removable batteries in four versions, ensuring a range of power options for different needs. Delta also offers three different combinations of controller and display. These range from a simple switch and minimalist display integrated into the top tube to more advanced options that support turn-by-turn navigation.

Technology and experience

Delta is anything but a newcomer to the mobility industry. With more than a decade of experience in developing electric motors for motorcycles, the company has been able to draw on extensive research and development capabilities to develop the Delta mid-motor. Delta will initially focus on premium OEMs in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and BeNeLux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg). The first test samples are expected to be distributed in late summer 2024, with mass production and delivery scheduled to begin in early 2025.
