In her dissertation , published by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health ( BAuA ), Britta Kirchhoff examines the use of data goggles and their effects on team processes. Among other things, she found that the troubleshooting performance of teams improves when data goggles are providing images. Groups that talked only over the phone had worse results.

However, according to Kirchhoff, certain characteristics of data goggles, such as how they are attached, could negatively affect wearer acceptance. Delays in video transmission also bothered some of the test subjects. The author thus advises taking such aspects into account when choosing a suitable data goggle model.

In the summer of 2018, a University of Greifswald study came to the conclusion that communication via data goggles is as effective as having a face-to-face conversation. The key benefit of using them is that they give the participants the same field of view and thus the same perspective, significantly reducing the risk of error.
