Since time immemorial people have had two ways to represent visual input from our environment: flat, in the form of pictures – or spatial, in the form of sculptures. Translating a two-dimensional picture into a virtual, three-dimensional presentation is becoming increasingly important in many areas, from entertainment to architecture, science and medical diagnostics. Delft University of Technology has been working with three-dimensional visualization of scientific and medical data for some time already, and is presenting the current status of research and its applications at HANNOVER MESSE 2014.

Until now, the technology used to create three-dimensional views of data from computed or magnetic resonance tomography (CT and MRT) required immense computing power – particularly for complex visualization methods. In contrast, the Exposure Rendering developed by TU Delft offers excellent image quality in real time with a standard graphics processing unit, and display quality can be even further enhanced by using multiple GPUs. Plus, the software can be used on mobile devices by streaming video from a server. This enables several users or teams to collaborate simultaneously to process and evaluate the images. Because the data itself does not leave the server, the system still provides maximum data security, which can be very important for medical information in particular.
