How to meet the stringent requirements of the hydrogen industry
TÜV SÜD supports the development of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies with comprehensive testing and certification services. In addition, TÜV SÜD Academy offers a wide range of training and qualification programs for the safe handling of hydrogen.

It is becoming increasingly clear that green hydrogen will play a crucial role in the global reduction of CO2 emissions by partially or completely replacing natural gas. However, this places high demands on manufacturers and operators, who must ensure that their components and systems function reliably and safely both during the conversion process and when operating with pure hydrogen. TÜV SÜD therefore offers a comprehensive range of testing and certification services for hydrogen technologies to support the transition to renewable energies.
Safety and performance testing for hydrogen technologies
TÜV SÜD performs tests that cover the entire pressure and temperature range for hydrogen, helium and gas mixtures. This includes functional and endurance tests up to 130 megapascals, leakage and permeation tests, and hydraulic burst tests up to 400 megapascals. In addition, pressure vessel leakage and permeation tests are performed up to 105 megapascals. TÜV SÜD also tests the hydrogen compatibility of metallic and non-metallic materials.
Comprehensive EMC testing
TÜV SÜD also offers comprehensive EMC testing for hydrogen systems and environmental testing according to LV123/124, which are relevant for mobile, stationary and industrial hydrogen applications. These include fuel cell modules, systems and pressure vessels.
New procedure accelerates conversion
With H2 Readiness Certification, TÜV SÜD has also developed a new procedure that confirms the suitability of materials and components for future use with hydrogen. Together with component manufacturers, the P003 standard was introduced to test the resistance of materials under hydrogen pressure. A guideline for the H2 readiness of power plants supports operators in converting combined cycle power plants to hydrogen operation, thus accelerating the introduction of this environmentally friendly technology.
Certifications for fuel cell systems and H2 components
TÜV SÜD also offers voluntary certification programs that enable manufacturers to demonstrate the high quality and safety of their fuel cell systems and hydrogen components. These certificates cover, for example, stationary fuel cell systems for decentralized power generation and hydrogen-carrying components used in hydrogen refueling stations or hydrogen-powered vehicles. To meet the stringent requirements of the hydrogen industry, certification is based on international standards such as the IEC 62282 series, ISO 19880-X for refuelling station components, ISO 19887 for vehicle components and ISO 17268 for fuelling nozzles and receptacles.
Training and qualifications in handling hydrogen
In addition to testing and certification services, TÜV SÜD Academy offers training along the entire hydrogen value chain. Current seminars include topics such as “Material compatibility in connection with hydrogen”, “Power-to-gas plants with hydrogen”, “Safety of hydrogen drives in rail vehicles” and “Construction and leak testing of hydrogen plants”.
