The GET H2 initiative brings together a number of businesses and research institutes from the energy sector, including Siemens and RWE Generation SE. For their first project, the partners are planning to set up hydrogen infrastructure in Emsland that will connect the energy, industrial, transport and heating sectors at every stage of the value chain. Key elements are the construction of a 105 MW power-to-gas plant which will convert wind-generated electricity into hydrogen, the transportation and storage of pure hydrogen in existing infrastructure, and finally hydrogen use.

The initiative is entering this project into the Living Labs for the Energy Transition ideas contest held by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. A decision from the ministry is expected by the end of June. If successful, the companies hope to start putting their plans into action in two years, although implementation is subject to economic viability.
