Liability issues come to the fore for 3D printing
You can’t make an omelet without breaking some eggs – this is also the case for 3D printing. Some liability issues are yet to be clarified for this comparatively new technology, a market that insurance companies are increasingly catching on to.

At the end of 2017, Allianz warned that many industrial companies were unaware of the related risks. As an example, it cited components made by additive manufacturing: If they prove faulty, have to be recalled, or even result in personal injury, this can cost the manufacturer money and its reputation. The times in which suppliers could be held liable are now a thing of the past, due to in-house production with 3D printing.
Reason enough for R+V Versicherung to adapt its business and product liability insurance to the new risks for customers who manufacture 3D products themselves or operate a 3D printing center, covering, among other things, any additional costs for avoiding imminent business disruption. Detailed information (not only) on liability issues in 3D printing has been compiled by the Hessian Ministry of Economics. The brochure is available free of charge.
