High-performance machining is a major trend in machine tools. Drawing on new machine designs, components and cutting materials, it leads to better cutting performance and faster material removal. Research & Technology, the leading international trade fair for research, development and technology transfer at HANNOVER MESSE 2014, is therefore the right platform for presenting an innovative lightweight carriage for machining centers recently developed by researchers at KIT.
To ensure high machining quality, machining centers must have especially stiff structures and superior dynamic stability. A major cause of reduced quality is vibrations resulting from the excitation of machine resonant frequencies by process operations. The innovative lightweight carriage developed by KIT has a system of chambers that can be filled with liquid in various configurations to adjust the resonant frequency. This significantly improves the quality and productivity of the manufacturing process.
