European governments and companies are increasingly turning away from non-European productivity platforms. In response, an alliance of leading European companies and independent organizations has launched Euro-Office and presented it in Berlin. This new solution for document, spreadsheet, and presentation editing was developed through a sovereign community collaboration involving more than a dozen organizations. A technical preview of the solution is available now. Supported by renowned European technology companies such as IONOS, Nextcloud, the EuroStack Initiative, bTactic, Soverin, Abilian, XWiki, and OpenProject, the first stable version is expected by summer.

Why a sovereign Office alternative is necessary

Office software remains a business-critical infrastructure, yet from the consortium’s perspective, there is a lack of a solution that is fully compatible with Microsoft formats and offers a familiar user experience as well as true digital sovereignty under European leadership—without legal risks posed by foreign influence. “Given the geopolitical developments of the past year, Europe urgently needs a reliable, fully Microsoft-compatible, and easy-to-use sovereign office solution,” says Achim Weiß, CEO of IONOS. “Our initiative offers a suite with a familiar interface that includes all the features needed to work with documents, presentations, and spreadsheets.”

Existing alternatives on the market often compromise on compatibility and user-friendliness, pose legal risks regarding licensing and trademark rights, or are developed without transparent and open governance, according to the project partners’ assessment. Existing alternatives lack an independent, sustainable community of contributors, which poses a structural risk for organizations that process sensitive or public data.

Euro-Office aims to close the gap

Euro-Office aims to close this gap. According to its developers, the software enables seamless processing of common document, spreadsheet, and presentation formats and offers a user interface that minimizes the learning curve and migration effort. The codebase is released under open-source licenses and is free of trademark restrictions. Development takes place through a transparent process that enables public oversight and participation. The result is an office suite designed for functionality and strategic resilience, according to the developers.

“Responsibility for a vital piece of digital infrastructure”

“Europe has had the technical building blocks for years. What was missing until now was an initiative to bundle them into a meaningful overall solution,” says Frank Karlitschek, CEO of Nextcloud. “With Euro-Office, we’re not starting from scratch, but taking responsibility for a vital piece of digital infrastructure. This finally gives organizations tools they can trust: transparent, durable, and managed in Europe.”

European Community Initiative

Euro-Office is a coordinated European initiative that unites commercial open-source companies, independent developers, and civil society actors under a common governance framework. The initiative is currently being driven across Europe by IONOS, Nextcloud, the EuroStack Initiative, bTactic, Soverin, Abilian, XWiki, and OpenProject. These participants represent a broad cross-section of the European open-technology ecosystem and have committed to providing significant resources to the project. They are calling for the joint further development of the suite. The initiative is aimed at companies, public bodies, community contributors, and civil society organizations that advocate for open standards, digital rights, and sovereign digital infrastructure.

Technical Preview Available

A public technical preview of Euro-Office is now available on GitHub. It offers organizations and individuals the opportunity to evaluate the core functionality, test compatibility, and submit feedback even before the first stable version is scheduled to be released this summer.
