As a registered non-profit organization, funded by the German government (90%) and the state of Saxony (10%), the Heimholtz Center at Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) pursues cross-disciplinary research in the health, energy and materials fields. One of their goals is to develop processes to market-readiness, and also actively support their market launch. The Helmholtz Association research centers are now presenting their spin-off businesses at a shared start-up stand against the background of the world’s largest industry fair. This includes the HZDR's latest project, the company Biconex founded only shortly before HANNOVER MESSE 2014, which is presenting an innovative technology for coating plastic surfaces.

Biconex leads the way to the industrial application of an environmentally friendly variation of plastic electroplating. This new coating technology completely eliminates the use of the hazardous chromosulfuric acid used until now for electroplating, which significantly reduces not only the health risks but also the costs associated with the process. The primary target group is manufacturers of chrome-plated automobile accessories, such as door handles or radiator grilles. This young company aims to achieve coating of 20,000 square meters per day with the new process. Biconex can likely look forward to a very good future for its process, particularly given the ban on chromosulfuric acid due to take effect in the EU in 2017.
