Making railroads even more reliable in the future
Standardization, energy saving as well as easy handling are important trends in the railroad industry. With the Han HPR VarioShell, HARTING has developed a housing system that is both flexible and robust, specifically for railcar crossovers, offering a wide range of options and customer benefits.

As can be vividly imagined, the cable connections between two railroad carriages place special demands on reliability, flexibility and robustness. The HARTING Technology Group from Espelkamp, one of the leading developers and manufacturers of connectors and once again represented at HANNOVER MESSE 2022 with a number of innovations - of which the Han-Modular Domino Module industrial connector was even nominated for the HERMES AWARD - has taken up this challenge and created a new standard for carriage crossovers with Han HPR VarioShell.
Behind the Han HPR VarioShell is a flexible housing system that has been tailored precisely to the current demands of the rail industry in terms of standardization, reduction of energy consumption, and ease of handling. In addition, the new design is designed to ensure a longer service life. For example, the shape of the cover ensures optimized drainage of water, dust and dirt to protect the screws from environmental influences. A special contour on the back of the HPR VarioShell also creates the necessary space for ice to expand behind the housing, reducing stress on it. Thanks to a circumferential internal seal in conjunction with a counterpressure frame, the Han HPR VarioShell achieves IP69K protection. The removable cover allows the enclosure to be fitted both from inside the trolley and from outside. Cables can be easily routed through the wall in the process, resulting in additional weight reduction due to shorter cable runs. Easy accessibility also reduces the effort required for operation, service and maintenance. This is because in the event of a fault, not all connections have to be broken. It is sufficient to open the housing cover to identify and replace the faulty conductors or contacts.
