About 35% of the German industrial parks have no access to a fast Internet connection. This was reported by the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung newspaper, referring to figures taken from a response by the Federal Ministry of Transport to an inquiry by the FDP (Free Democratic Party). According to the study, 21,745 of the 62,074 industrial parks in Germany only have access to an Internet connection with a maximum speed of less than 50 Mbit/s. The federal states of Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are particularly affected. 57% of the industrial parks there are considered as lacking a sufficiently rapid connection.

Industry representatives call for a rapid expansion of fast Internet connection, which they consider indispensable for Germany as a business location. “These gaps must be closed as soon as possible. This is an enormous obstacle to innovation for the companies in the affected locations - and thus for the German economy,” said Eric Schweitzer, President of the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce ( DIHK ), in an interview conducted by the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.
