The DBU sees conserving and making efficient use of raw materials and energy as a key area of expertise for future-proof companies. Ultimately, resource efficiency reduces environmental pollution, strengthens global competitiveness and creates new skilled jobs. "Harnessing the potential for savings in industry and commerce is a key aim of the DBU's support work," says DBU General Secretary Dr. Heinrich Bottermann. ONYX composites GmbH - based in Osnabrück, Germany - is extremely well placed in this context, as can be seen at HANNOVER MESSE 2017, where the company is showcasing the ultralight ONYX MiO bio-hybrid model at the DBU's stand.

The hybrid car is designed to cover short to medium distances reliably, comfortably, healthily and free of exhaust fumes, thanks in large part to the drive mix of electric motor and pedal power. With a range from 30 to 80 kilometers, a maximum speed of 45 kilometers per hour and a weight of less than 180 kilograms (without battery), the two-seater car could be used wherever bikes reach their limits in terms of range and comfort. This lightweight and environmentally friendly vehicle features a clever combination of fiber composites and tried-and-tested electric bike components and has a passing resemblance to a recumbent bike with its bodywork. With a low entry point, two small front wheels, two large rear wheels and removable windows and doors, it offers ample space for two people, who can sit next to each other. Initial road tests have already demonstrated the concept's functional capabilities, and a realistic prototype is due to be created in the next development stage.
