The system was developed by the environmental service provider Interseroh along with bifa Umweltinstitut and scientifically reviewed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV . The method starts with packaging design and involves a review on three levels.

  • Can consumers easily designate the packaging to the correct collection system?
  • Can the current technologies sort them into the right material category or do certain materials prevent a clear designation?
  • Is the packaging suitable for material recycling or is this being made difficult by labels or seals, for example?
  • The more points a type of packaging gets on a scale of 0 to 20, the easier and better it can be recycled. In this way, weak points and possibilities for improving packaging can be specifically identified - so that in the future more packaging can be put into high-quality recycling and the raw materials contained therein can be fed into the reusable material cycle in the future. This is also an important point in the new German Packaging Act , which will enter into force in 2019.
