Online: the Baltic Sea’s biggest wind farm
The Arkona offshore wind farm, around 35 km from Rügen, was opened by German chancellor Angela Merkel on April 16. At full load, its turbines can generate enough electricity for 400,000 households.

The farm is operated by Essen-based energy supplier E.ON and by Norwegian shareholder Equinor, who invested 1.2 billion euros between them. Approximately 70% of this sum went to companies based in Germany. The turbines stand on steel foundations built by a business from Rostock, for example, while the monitoring and control center is based in Sassnitz on Rügen. The chancellor was joined at the opening by Manuela Schwesig, Minister‐President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and by the Norwegian Energy Minister Kjell Borge Freiberg.
