The wind farm was already generating electricity even before its official opening. As of mid-April, all 60 wind turbines are now online, producing a combined output of 385 MW – enough to supply around 400,000 households. The turbines have a hub height of 100 meters and a rotor diameter of 154 m, which means that the blades reach 177 m in the air at their highest point. Construction on the project began in August 2017, with the first electricity generated in September 2018. This makes Arkona one of the fastest completed offshore wind power projects of all time.

The farm is operated by Essen-based energy supplier E.ON and by Norwegian shareholder Equinor, who invested 1.2 billion euros between them. Approximately 70% of this sum went to companies based in Germany. The turbines stand on steel foundations built by a business from Rostock, for example, while the monitoring and control center is based in Sassnitz on Rügen. The chancellor was joined at the opening by Manuela Schwesig, Minister‐President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and by the Norwegian Energy Minister Kjell Borge Freiberg.
