Paper gets super smart
Sustainable packaging materials are becoming increasingly important because governments and citizens want to protect the environment. But who would have thought that paper could make an important contribution?

That is where SUPERSMART comes in: Over three years, the European consortium developed a procedure that combines classical electronics production with paper, transforming the old medium into a carrier material for electronic components such as smart labels. In addition, the process is highly scalable and suitable for mass production.
The effort was worthwhile: The project team won the OE-A competition in the category “Best Publicly Funded Project Demonstrator” with the SUPERSMART Anti-Counterfeiting Label, an active marker that registers blows and vibrations so it can recognize the cause of transport-associated product damage. Furthermore, it can distinguish from counterfeits in areas such as medical and luxury products.
The International VDMA Association OE-A (Organic and Printed Electronics Association) stages the OE-A Competition every year to promote further development of the printed electronics.
