Polar Night Energy’s Sand Battery powers up fossil-free heat
At HANNOVER MESSE 2026, Polar Night Energy showcased its Sand Battery technology, a high-temperature thermal energy storage system that stores excess wind and solar electricity as heat in sand and other industrial by-products. Electricity heats air, which transfers the energy into the storage material, allowing it to be retained for days or even weeks before being used for district heating or industrial processes.

Polar Night Energy emphasizes that the technology uses abundant, non-toxic materials and is projected to operate for more than 30 years without performance degradation. The system, which replaces fossil fuels in heat production, creates a major opportunity to reduce industrial and municipal emissions.
The world’s largest Sand Battery is already operating in Pornainen, Finland, where it is the primary heat production facility for the local district’s heating network. The installation significantly cuts emissions while also helping stabilize power grids and participate in reserve energy markets.
“The Sand Battery is part of the push toward large-scale renewable integration,” explains Tommi Eronen, Polar Night Energy’s CEO. “It is a key technology that enables reliable wind and solar growth while strengthening energy resilience across Europe.”
