Speaker Overview

There is a video camera built into the smart glasses, which were developed by LLVision Technology from Chaoyang in Beijing, and enables officials to spot criminals in their surroundings . In order to speed up the system, it is connected with a portable device where a facial database is stored. The glasses are able to recognize a person from the 10,000 archived faces in just 100 ms.

Using this method, officials can filter out individuals, for example, who have left their place of residence under a false identity, in spite of travel restrictions. This makes the mobile glasses/cameras significantly faster and much more precise than fixed surveillance cameras with a similar function, such as those being tested by the German police and Ministry of the Interior at Berlin S├╝dkreuz train station since last year. In Germany, this has already led to heavy criticism ; in China, human rights activists fear that surveillance could also be used to target dissidents.
