The considerable variety of equipment options, especially in the automotive industry, results in highly complex production processes. To simplify this, the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation IFF in Magdeburg is currently researching the use of RFID chips. In cooperation with Mercedes-Benz Vans , a total of 40 individual components for which the approach appears particularly promising were identified: The factory employees scan the components equipped with a chip before assembly, making it immediately clear whether all parts have been installed for example.

In contrast to a conventional barcode, RFID chips provide numerous additional information – for example, which model a particular component is intended for. Another new feature is that components so equipped can be easily scanned even after assembly. Daimler sees the introduction of the new technology as an important component of fully digitized Sprinter series production, which Mercedes-Benz is aiming for by 2025 .
