The Fraunhofer Institute for High-Frequency Physics and Radar Technology FHR combines 3D printing technology with the self-developed high-frequency scanner SAMMI to investigate and continuously improve the quality of HF components. The material properties of an object can be selectively influenced in additive manufacturing, specifically by controlling the density distribution of the printing material. In this way, optimized components are created for use in the high-frequency range.

The researchers use their self-developed transmitted light system SAMMI to analyze the permeability of the workpieces, for example. The solution scans the material and allows the visualization of gradients as well as the early detection of production errors. SAMMI was specially developed for industrial use and operates without contact using millimeter waves. So far, the system has been used mainly by the food industry for the quality inspection of packaged goods.
