The mobile equipment market is dominated by four companies: Huawei, Ericsson, Nokia, and ZTE account for over 90% of the world market. Samsung has so far played a very minor role: According to data from statistics portal Statista , the Koreans accounted for just 3% of the total market in 2017.

But now the Group plans to significantly up its stake in this market. Its customers already include mobile operators Sprint in the US and MTS in Russia. In Germany, Samsung has successfully tested 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) in collaboration with Spanish group Telefónica, with tests conducted in the Hamburg district of Hamm between December 2018 and February 2019 to establish the suitability of 5G technology for the supply of private households with Gigabit connections. Telefónica trades in Germany as the mobile operator O2, but does not own its own fixed-network lines.

Samsung can currently supply the relevant technology for building 4G and 5G networks. However, since there are no existing customers in Germany, its products and services are really only interesting for new turnkey installations.
